Purple striped desert

The Petrified Forest National Park includes a large section of painted desert.  It is of course not actually painted with paint and brushes, however its geologic history has resulted in very distinctive sediment delineation.

I suspect that had I grown up in this part of the world, I may have become more interested in geology.  Both the colours of the earth and the way that they lie to evenly layer by layer here are fascinating.  Even more so after having see the way these layers have become shifted into diagonals in other parts of the state at the Grand Canyon and the Superstition Mountains.
