Last Thursday, 21st April 2016, the longest reigning monarch of the United Kingdom turned 90 years old. There were many official events around the UK to celebrate HRH Queen Elizabeth II’s real birthday. A second set of celebrations take place in June, when the weather is anticipated to be better.
One of the official events taking place was the lighting of beacons on the tops of hills around the country. They are a traditional method of passing communication across long distances and our village took part, lighting a beacon at the top of our hill. In total over 900 beacons were lit across the country, Her Majesty having lit the first one at Windsor.
