One of the things I really enjoyed while travelling by train around the US was the stations. I suppose one of the advantages of having a passenger network which is not running at over 90% capacity like the one in the UK is means the buildings designed and built at the height of the railroad era remain adequate and are preserved.
There is a section of the LA Union Station waiting room which was closed to the public when I was there. It was only roped off, so you could still see into it and take pictures. When you walk underneath the Restaurant sign you unfortunately no longer find a a restaurant. I really like that despite this, the attractive sign remains.
