Canal calm

Having been a defensive trench outside the city walls, the Landwehrkanal is now in the middle of the bustling city of Berlin. Trees grow along most of its banks and there are parks or playgrounds on one side or another. Any fan of weeping willows will be well rewarded by a boat trip along here.

There are also plenty of animals. We only saw the birds, however, the frequency with which we saw fish-eating herons, must mean there are plenty of fish in the canal too.

At other times one is reminded of being in the middle of a constantly innovative city by the styles of some of the buildings along the canal

Last but not least, the frequency of the bridges reminds anyone on a boat that most of Berlin is more interested in the land and crossing from one side of the water to the other, rather than enjoying the serenity of gliding on water from Kreuzberg to Charlottenburg.
