The old town of Würzburg lies on the eastern side of the river, overlooked by the fortress mentioned last time. It is full of lovely buildings to admire.

I was particularly tickled by this decoration above the doorway of a house on “Eichhornstrasse” – Squirrel Street.

Würzburg has a mixed Christian population, the highest denomination is catholic, but about a quarter of the residents are protestant. There are large churches in the old town serving each of these communities.

The impression walking around the city now is that it suffered little damage in World War II. The sign on this building shows that much of this is down to significant rebuilding work which took place in the second half of the 20th century, albeit retaining the older style of buildings. It states that after its complete destruction on 16 March 1945, the building was rebuilt and decorated in 1965.
